Loss of female bladder control is a very common problem. Prevalence of this problem among American women between 15 and 64 years of age ranges from 10 to 25 percent and is even higher in older age groups. Economic impact of urinary incontinence is enormous. By year 2000 total estimated cost of urinary incontinence was 29.3 billion dollars with estimated annual savings of 8 billion dollars if the onset of urinary incontinence was delayed by just 5 years.

A 1991 study of women athletes with urinary incontinence in a university setting showed that 40 percent of these women first noticed urinary incontinence while in high school. About 30 percent of menstrual pads are really used by women for urinary incontinence. Despite it's prevalence urinary incontinence is underdiagnosed and underreported because of lack of education and embarrassment.

Loss of bladder control can affect a woman's personal, professional and social life. Consider a woman who has to stop the car every hour on a family vacation and comes up with excuses to avoid the trip next time, a woman who is unable to go shopping, socialize and laugh with friends and have a normal life, a businesswoman who is unable to attend an important meeting without excusing herself every half hour. Women who have to empty their bladder at work may be criticized as being non-efficient.

By bringing urinary incontinence out of the closet women can manage, treat and even cure this problem. Urinary incontinence will continue to be a significant health problem among American women. The educational resources enable women to make informed decisions about their health.

Women's Health Foundation offers women an opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills in becoming active participants in their own well being and provide others an opportunity to learn how to get in involved and help a family member with health issues like bladder control problem.

Lack of information helps perpetuate poor health. Women with less access to information are less apt to recognize problems or understand the value of preventive and curative care. Education, knowledge and the demand to know are the key to a healthy life. With the help of informative programs women can be better partakers in their own well being and be in control again.
